The Hard Truth, Why Your Coaching Business Isn’t Growing (And What to Do About It)

Show Notes

Are you actually chasing what is important to you, or are you missing opportunities because you are chasing the wrong things? Are you working hard, ticking off tasks, and doing all the thing you believe you should? Yet, you are not seeing the results you truly want. Does that sound familiar? Often, we are so focused on what we think we should be doing that we overlook the real opportunities right in front of us.

Are You Chasing the Wrong Things?

A recent trip to Perth inspired this episode. I love visiting the city. Walking through the CBD always brings back memories of the early days as a country apprentice, seeing the city for the first time. The colours, the noises, the smells, and even the rustling leaves down the streets. Perth feels vibrant and alive.

Every visit, I discover something new—little gems I had not noticed before, even though I have walked those streets hundreds of times. I saw a fountain that I had never noticed before. It was tucked in the corner of the Government House gardens. Somehow, I had never seen that fountain before. Perhaps the vegetation on the fence was different, or maybe I noticed it because someone had stopped to take photos. I am not sure, but it was an amazing fountain. This reminded me of coaching.

So, what are the things you are missing because you are heading in the wrong direction? Or maybe you are moving too fast and not recognising the gems and opportunities right in front of you?

Are you chasing the right things? Are they aligned with your goals? A great podcast episode you can check out is Episode 220:  Aligning Passion, Values & Purpose to Your Business With Liz Del Borrello.

Goal Setting

Have you done your goal setting for the year? It might be tiresome but it is very difficult to go on a trip if you do not know which direction you are heading. Business is much the same.

If you do not have three big goals—the three big rocks I like to talk about—then it is really hard to know whether you have actually made progress today, this week, or this month. It is easy to get caught up in busy work, feeling like you are getting things done, but at the end of the week, what have you actually achieved?

Did you get the 20 clients you wanted? Did you get that one client? How are you getting paid? Have you secured a free client that could potentially turn into paid work? Whatever your goals are, if you spend all your time doing busy work, you will never achieve them. Make sure what you are doing aligns with your goals. Carve out time for those big rocks every day. If not daily, then every second day—at an absolute minimum, once a week.

Sometimes giant leaps, sometimes small steps, and sometimes just staying consistent can make all the difference.

Discovering Hidden Opportunities

In coaching, one of the most rewarding moments is helping clients uncover the opportunities they have been missing. Often, the path to success is not about adding more to your plate. It is about peeling back the layers, letting go of distractions, and focusing on what truly matters.

Shifting your focus can be transformative. It is not about working harder. It is about working smarter, aligning your actions with your true priorities, and recognising the hidden gems that are already within your reach.

Grow Your Coaching Business

If you are running around in circles, doing things that maybe you should not be doing, ask yourself: Is your energy being used to build someone else’s dream? What about your own dream? You can listen back to an old episode about chasing someone else’s dream. Click here to listen to Episode 38: Are You Wasting Your Brilliance Chasing Someone Else’s Dream?

Another great episode was Episode 124: What is Your Story where Ian Hawkins and I had a fantastic chat about your story. Not only about who you want to be, but also about what you are telling yourself. Are you telling yourself that you are a successful, paid coach? Or are you telling yourself that it is just a side gig and you will get there one day?

Self-talk matters. Sometimes we slip into negative patterns, but do not stay there. What can you do to ensure you are achieving your goals? Have you set them, and are they aligned with your direction?

We are almost at the end of January. What have you achieved this year so far? What will you achieve in February? Do not let this same conversation repeat itself in March or April.

Remember, if you do not act on those opportunities, someone else might step in. So why not make the most of what is right in front of you?
