Show Notes
Let’s talk about judgment. But I will be judged, right? Yes, you will. If not by others, by yourself. And that is just something that you are going to have to live with. Remember, you are not going to be everybody’s cup of tea.
Be Unapologetically You
Think about phones. Some people are Apple. Some people are Android. They are roughly, at the moment, about 50/50 – although depending on which circles you look at but Apple people are never going to go to Android, or very, very rarely. Occasionally, when they want a decent camera, they might swap over to the dark side, but they will not change.
But does Apple change their marketing to try and get those Android people to come? No. They just stick to what they know.
Cars are another example. If you think about Ford and Holden – or Chevy as it is now – particularly here in Australia, we have a race called Bathurst, which is supercars. And it used to be just the two car companies. And sometimes it even got to fisticuffs because people were so passionate about their car. At the end of the day, they just do car. They do not change their marketing. They do not change their features. They do not change the way they are to try and get the other people to come across.
So why should you be changing your message because a couple of people might judge you?
Their Judgement Isn't Your Truth
I was just on a joint venture event this morning, and they were talking about different types of coaches, and people were saying,
“Oh yes, we coach in this space, in that space.”
And this lady got on and said, “Are you a mums coach? Do you coach ladies with children?”
And then a few people put their hands up and she said, “Well, I am doing something different. I am coaching and setting up a community for ladies without children – childless ladies.” And that was something that people had not heard of before.
Setting up those communities that were for women that did not have children.
And why not? There is lots of space for women that do. But you are never going to get somebody who has not got children to suddenly become a mum if they are over the age of mums – or they never wanted to be a mum – and vice versa. And if you are a mum, you cannot go and suddenly become childless. Not by choice anyway.
So those are the sorts of things that we need to think about – staying in our lane and making sure that we are serving our people and not worrying quite so much about being judged.
Stop Self Judgement
We do not put ourselves out there because:
“Oh, our head is not quite right.”
“Our lipstick is not the right colour.”
“We did not put the lipstick on.”
“We are not as made-up as we should be.”
“We did not think about what people would think.”
“We are worried that we are not as good as the person who has done 20 chapters more than we have.”
“We are an author. We are not an author.” Etc., etc.
All the things that go on with that. All the little things in our head that stop the show. Give yourself a good talking to. One, a lot of people do not care. The judgment is going to be a very minor part and most of it is going to be yours.
Take what is the first step you can take? What is it that you can do to actually get yourself out there and let people know that you can help them?
If you can help that one person who is hiding in the corner because they are just waiting for you then would that not be a good thing? Quite often, unsophisticated buyers will only ever interact with one coach.
And if that coach does not give them a good experience, they will be too worried about trying to do it again. So what if you are that one coach that can help them? Would it not be better to put yourself out there and help that person rather than to have that little voice in your head going, “No. No. No. Do not do it.”
We are not perfect, and you cannot be perfect. You never will be. And perfection is one of those things that you are never going to know until you put yourself out there.
Reframe Your Thinking
So what are the things that you can do to stop that little negative voice inside your head? I started this podcast because I did not like the way I sounded. I did not like hearing my voice. Now, sometimes I even listen to it in the car and I just critique it like I would any other podcast.
It will take practice. Yes, every day is not going to be perfect. But if you do not start getting those reps and getting out there, how are you going to help your people? We have done quite a lot on visibility and being seen in recent episodes, so check some of those out if you need a little bit more encouragement.

So what else can you do? You can whittle it down. You can get those little thoughts out of your head. You can practice. You can get those reps up, just as I said. One step at a time.

But I will Be Judged
Set your messaging. Be clear on your intentions. Pre-plan it. Think about what you are going to say before you say it. Have some little notes if you need. But make sure that you do your best effort. And that will also help stop the judgment because you know you have done the best you can.
You are amazing. You are a great coach. You can do this.
