Borrowing Belief Until You Build Your Own

Show Notes

Have you ever wanted to do something but just did not quite have that confidence? So what you need to do in these situations is borrow somebody else’s belief. A good reason to have a coach. Some of your clients are coming to you to be their coach, because they really want to do something, but they just don’t believe in themselves, or they don’t think that they’ve got the skills or they think they need another qualification.

You Make Progress

As a child, when we started to walk and we were falling over, we’d get up and would wait for that pat on the back, would wait for a parent or a sibling sometimes to say, hey, you are doing a great job. Get up, walk one more step, or they were holding our fingers so that we could climb up and do that.

And that’s an important thing because that’s how we wired. We always are looking for somebody else’s belief. But as adults, sometimes we need to have our own belief that we need to be believing that we can do it. Get out of that perfectionism and realise that going forward is the key. Not necessarily doing it perfectly. So making sure that you are taking those steps and moving ahead.

You Step Into Character

I can remember years ago I used to put on a uniform when I went to my daughter’s school. Even though I was working from home and way back then, working from home wasn’t cool. But it meant that I felt like I was working, which I was. But it also gave the Atwood impression, and even my girlfriends would say, oh, you are working today. I’ll we’ll catch up and have a coffee playdate after school. But the days that I didn’t put my uniform on, they said, oh, you are having a day off. Do you want to come down the coffee shop or come over and have a coffee or a cup of tea?

And it was just a different perception and it’s a different perception for you as well as for your clients and the entire outside world. So acting as if can be really important.

You Become Motivated

It’s amazing how you can lift yourself up and move on to these things that you never thought you were going to be able to when somebody else has that confidence in you. I know myself, I was going for my ICC, the International Coaching Federation accredited coach, and I was having a rough time. So I padded up with somebody else who was also doing a qualification, and we got together and she said, you’ve got this, you can do it. No problems at all. And with that belief, I was able to move past that little self-doubt, that little talk, as she would say, that sits on your shoulder telling you what to do.

As we know, we would never talk to people the way we often self talk to ourselves a good way. So picking up those little patterns that are running around in our head is really important. And that’s another great way that a coach can help you, because I can quite often see it when you are having those little repeating things.

Creating Your Own Belief

What is it that you can do there? Anchors are amazing things. So is this something that you do every day that you can anchor that belief to? I’m going back to the gym. I haven’t done it for a while and I need to anchor that belief. So I’m going to do it every time I have a coaching session with my coach, and instead of booking out the hour for my coach, I’m going to book two hours and one of those hours is going to be going back to the gym.

So making those kind of anchors, is it a case of putting your running shoes on the toilet? So you have to lift them up and that’s an anchor or is it something else. Is it putting things beside your case? Is it putting your keys in a certain place so that anchors that behavior and things that you need to do?

Sometimes it’s rewards. People work really well on rewards. So is it once you’ve done recorded the podcast or written the blog or posted that piece of content, do you have a reward? Whatever you do, make sure you complete it may it be weekly or monthly goals. You can keep your motivation up through giving yourself a reward or what ever will work for you.

Owning Your Actions

Hold yourself accountable to the public. That’s a great way to get your motivation happening, isn’t it? Tell people. Tell your significant others. Tell your family, or tell your community that you are doing something. Because we often will do so much more if we have to save face, if we see ourselves as people placing and not wanting to let somebody down, not wanting to front up to your next coaching session and say, well, I haven’t done it or not getting somebody ask you to 25 days of it, but you said you were going to do 30.

Borrowing Belief Until You Build Your Own

So make sure that you are moving forward taking those little steps. And if it’s a day that it just didn’t work out for whatever reason, then pat yourself on the back for at least having a go. And if it’s a really bad day and nothing went right, what do you do when you get out of bed? You breathe and you can continue on from there.
