Why People Don’t Trust You Yet (Even If You Are Good)

Show Notes

Why do people not trust you, even when you know you could help them? You know your stuff. You are out there. You have done your training. You are showing up, but you are not getting the clients. Why is that? You have your fancy funnels. You might even have a website or maybe it is still stuck on your computer. Trust is the missing piece. The confidence that you bring. Do you have the experience? Do you have the confidence in yourself? Why are people not trusting you?

Trust Is Everything

So why are people not trusting you? That is the question you need to ask.

Yes, you might be visible, but are you being credible? Are you being authentic? Are you showing up as you, or are you trying to follow somebody else’s script and do what they are doing? Are you following someone who is a lot further along than you and trying to copy what they are doing now, not what they did before? People do not buy offers. They buy outcomes and only when they trust you.

And no, trust does not have to take a long time. You can have a short conversation with someone and they say, yes, you are the person for me.

You Are not Being Authentic

We have all been to networking events and other situations where we just got that icky feeling. That person just is not quite genuine. They are not showing up the way you think they should. You are not quite sure what it is, but you do not trust them. And you certainly do not trust them enough to open up in a coaching session. So what is it that you need to change? Is it your offer? Are you jumping from one offer to another? Are you not making any offers at all? People might not even know whether they can work with you.

Are you confident about your pricing? Are you stumbling over that bit? When people ask what you do, do you say, “Well, it depends,” or, “It could be this or that”? That is not trustworthy. That is not someone who knows their stuff and can articulate it.

You Are Not Confident

I heard a great tip the other day: walk around and verbalise your offer. Talk to yourself. Put it out in the air and hear it back. Sometimes that is all it takes. Just practise how it sounds. How are you delivering it?

Are you saying, “I can help everybody”? Or are you clearly saying, “I help new coaches get unstuck and create a thriving business”?

You need to own your offer. You need to own your confidence. You need to own your coaching. And yes, it takes practice. If you need to practise in front of a mirror or with your coaching cohort, then do it. You need to be confident in telling people what you do. Be clear on the one person you help, what their pain point is, and how your solution matches that. Once you have got that, the trust will come. And yes, it sounds easy, but just start one step at a time and build your confidence with what you say.

You Are Not Fully Owning Your Identity

We all know actors learn their lines. Maybe you need to act “as if” and learn your line. Get out there and talk to real people. See how they react. And remember, friends and family are great, but they are usually not your ideal clients.

So what do you need to hear? What are people telling you in discovery calls or consultations? What words do they use? “I can’t get clients.” “I have tried everything.” “I don’t want to fail.” Add those words into your content.

And remember, content is about adding value, not just creating more noise. What is your presence like when you post? Are you doing it because you want to or because someone told you to post every day?

If it is not authentic to you, it will not work. And wobbly energy gets wobbly results.

Work on your energy. Work on your mindset. Tell yourself: “I am an amazing coach.” If that is too much, then start with: “I am a coach.” Own your identity as a coach. Practise it.

You Are Not Attracting The Right People

Go and talk to people. Find out where your ideal clients are – online or in person. The best way to get feedback is to talk to people and see how they react. And if they are not your ideal audience, that might actually be a good thing. You do not want to attract people who are not ready or are too far along in their journey.

You want to attract the people who need you now. Speak in their language. Reflect their pain points, hopes, and struggles. Paint the picture of what life could look like after working with you. Will they feel more confident? Start that business? Have a better relationship? What is the outcome they are dreaming of? Help them see what the journey could be. They know where they are. They may not be clear on how to get to where they want to go, but you can help them.

You Are Not Showing the Real You

So how will you show up this week to be more authentic? Will you do video? Even if you do not love video, it is one of the best and fastest ways to build trust. We want to see you. Especially in an AI world, people want to know you are real. If you have a website, do you have a photo of yourself? Can people see who you are?

People judge books by their covers. Coaching is personal. People want to know what you look and sound like before they will reach out. If they cannot see your face or name, they probably will not connect with you.
