Show Notes
Wohoho! Episode 301. We had our party last week and we started with 30 tips for coaches to create a thriving business. So we got to 15 and I thought that was probably enough for that one episode. So this episode is going to be 16 through to 30. So if you haven’t listened to episode 300, go back and check that out. And all the back catalog. There are so many things in there that can give you great tips, great motivations, some hacks and some interesting stuff.
Tip 16. Know Your Numbers
It’s really very important to know your numbers, because you can be doing things that you think are great, but if they are not actually making you money, then how are you going to pay your bills? And yes, as coaches we like to do good, but good takes money. So if you can earn money and earn well, then you can make the choice of what you would like to do with that money. Whether it is to donate to a local school, whether it’s to feed homeless people, whether it’s whatever your particular thing is. So making sure that you are charging well and knowing your numbers.
Tip 17. Time Blocking
Make sure that you are getting the things done in a way that works for you. So what works for you, focus wise? Following Pomodoro technique is a great idea. It’s a time management method that requires you to choose a task, set a timer, work on the task without interruption until the timer rings and then you take a short break.
Tip 18. Be Visible
Make sure that you are visible to your people and where they are. So if your people aren’t on Instagram, it’s no point you being on Instagram either. Yes, it can be fun and that’s great but is that actually building your business? So thinl about the platform whereyour people are, that’s where you are gonna be. It might be a combination of social, so it might be a combination of getting in zoom rooms and doing network, and it also might be getting actually out in front of people and doing it in person. So making sure that you are where your people are and that’s going to make you more visible and start to build that authority.
Tip 19. Keep Learning
Keep learning but make sure that you are implementing as well. You do need to be learning and keep the brains active. And especially if you have an ICF International Coaching Federation accreditation or one of the others where you do need to keep your CPI points up and that sort of thing.
Make sure that you are learning and learning things that are relevant and implement that because we can quite often get in that trap, can’t we? Where we okay la la la land try and try and try and and not do anything with it.
I love that when people say they go to conferences and then they block out the next two days to implement what they’ve learned, have the team meeting and get them on board.
A lot of conferences these days, you can bring somebody, bring somebody in in the online section as well. So use these areas where they’re available. So making sure that you are implementing and bringing the team in makes that great accountability. So that’s a fantastic way to do it too.
Tip 20. Simplify Your Offer
Make sure that you don’t have a million different things because it confused you. They get confused too. So start with one simple offer. Many people say one on one is the best way to go. To start with and build your practice up from there. If you have got experience in group, that might work for you, but if you haven’t, then one on one definitely does help that. And just pick a container, pick what you like, and then sell it to yourself first, making sure that you are happy with your simple offer.
Tip 21. Client First, Platform Second
Make sure that you are where your clients are and where they want to be but also making sure that you are talking to your client, not just playing the algorithm game, because that is not a good way to go.
You often hear of people that have lost their accounts or things have changed because they are just doing the algorithm. Truth is, you need to be talking to your people because people are the ones that are going to be interacting with you, and they are also the ones that are going to be paying your bills.
Tip 22. Repurpose
Now you can use your stuff over and over particularly things that have done really well. They say 42 days and then people don’t remember. Actually, even less than that. How many times have you seen something? And if you do see it, a couple of times you go, oh yeah, that’s right.
People will say “that was such a good point”. And we all share and we need to share it. That’s a great way to spread our message. So make sure that you are repurposing your stuff. You can use your current content and it might be a case of you change the caption, or you might have done it in a video and now you’re doing it as an image. It may seem different but it is just literally repurposing what you had before. So please don’t start from scratch every time. That’s just going to burn you out and it’s going to burn your time.
Tip 23. Own Your Own Expertise
You have expertise. You have been on this planet for a few years and like some of this quite a few years. So even if you are new to coaching, you do have expertise in other areas. What is it that you can bring in through there? What are those skills that you can use and transfer them into what you are doing? Because that’s what you need to do. You need to use those skills into your coaching. And it might be a case of you, actually using exactly those skills. So you might be coaching in leadership, and that’s where you might have come from in your corporate career.
Tip 24. You Are Not For Everybody
Don’t try to people please don’t try to please everyone. It’s not going to work. The tighter you can get your niche, the more you can get your messaging focused, the more people will be attracted to you. And you will be surprised because you will be attracting people that are outside of your nature as well.
But because you are clear in what you do and what you say and your marketing, then you will find that you will definitely attract your people. And it is so much easier when you know what you are doing. You’ve got your content pillars because you’re not talking to everybody because if you try to talk to everybody, it is just going to be generic and nobody’s going to be going.
Tip 25. Lead With Value
We’ve all heard this said lots and lots of times, but you need to make sure that you are giving value. If you are just going out there and sell. you are going to find it very difficult.
And we often worry about giving away everything. No, we don’t want to give away the farm, but we do need to let people know what it’s like to work with us and what we can do. So remember, tell them what their problems are, help them solve it but do not give them the exact answers, instead give them the bigger overview. So they can come to you for the how. Just be careful not to give them absolutely everything, or they’ll go off and sort it themselves and they won’t need you.
Tip 26. Ask For Testimony and Referrals
Do this particularly when they start getting some pay clients and they are working really well. They are getting those transformations to us because you think if you are doing a good job, they will give you their referrals. Unfortunately, people often don’t think that way. Sometimes they might think about the reviews on Google but we do need to ask if you haven’t got any? It might be a case of doing a bit of pro-bono work in exchange for a testimonial, but don’t lead with that.
Ask people. Once you have done a good work, you have got their transformation because we want to have genuine referrals and we want to be able to do the results, do the work, and to make sure that it is real. So definitely asking for referrals and testimonials when the situation arises.
Tip 27. Master Your Mindset
This business is a mindset game. All of this kind of stuff really does get in your mind. And if you don’t think you can do it, nobody else is going to think that you can do it either. So it’s little by little. Remember the expression act as if you want to be a fabulous coach? Act as if what would a fabulous coach be doing. Would they be double booking themselves? Would they be running around crazy? Would they be not watching their numbers, or would they have all of that in check?
Make sure that you are putting those building blocks in and you are not over committed and looking after your mindset. And sometimes it is a case of doing one thing that’s going to be great today.
Tip 28. Setting Boundaries
Making sure that you are setting those boundaries with your payments, with your timing, with people changing the appointment times. What are your boundaries? If you set those in your contract right at the beginning, it makes it really easy for people making sure that you are not saying yes to things that you don’t need to just because you have before, or you pleasing people.
Tip 29. Take Action
Stop consuming. Start applying. Once again, we’ve touched on this a little already, making sure that you are not just training, training, training, consuming, consuming, consuming. And that includes social media. Are you sitting there scrolling? Is that the first thing that you reach for in the morning? Do you need to take a break? Do you need to put your phone outside your bedroom?
Do you need to make sure that you don’t get on emails and socials and tell us that time, but making sure that you are actually implementing the things that you learn, sticking to your time frames, looking at all these other tips that we’ve put forward here, and making sure that you are actually taking action because you can talk about it until the cows come home.
Tip 30. You Are Running a Business
You need to start trading as a business. So things like knowing your numbers, having your accounting systems sorted, making sure that you dress appropriately even if you are just working from home. Sometimes putting on business attire can make that mindset shift.
So making sure that you are trading as a business, you can’t be doing everything for free. If you are a business, you can’t be spending all your time doing things for other people. So if you want this business to flourish, you need to treat it as a business. And even if it’s only a side business for the moment, it is a business. And start putting those processes in early so that you can expand. Start by getting a small team. It might be a case of getting a VIP for a few hours away, so that you can start one.
