Show Notes

Background

Matthew Turner is a British author who wrote his latest book, ‘Beyond The Pale’ on the back of interviewing hundreds of successful entrepreneurs, authors, investors, and thought-leaders. As well as writing his own books, Matthew ghost-writes both articles and books for other successful entrepreneurs and thought-leaders, in-between spending time with his two children.

The Downside of Social Media

Social media is available to display everyone else’s lives every single second of every single day. This means we often get sucked into a cycle of comparing ourselves to everyone that we see online. However, comparing your whole life and entrepreneurial journey with the sanitized, polished version of someone else’s life on social media will only damage your mindset in the long run. Remember that you are not seeing the whole picture – just because you do not see the less desirable parts of their life does not mean they don’t have them, and it does not mean that you are not allowed to have less desirable moments too.

The Importance of Breaks

Maintaining a high level of productivity for a long time is unsustainable. To do good work and grow your business successfully, you can’t be mentally, physically and emotionally exhausted – it will harm your work instead of helping it. When you suffer from these effects, your work isn’t at its best, and you may end up having to redo some of it or even lose clients due to a decrease in quality.

Overworking does not help your business grow.

Are you enforcing breaks and moments where you can simply exist?

One Size Does Not Fit All

There are always new ‘surefire’ ways to improve your productivity that others are pushing. Most of them are not tailored to your specific needs or you though, and they may have negative effects on your work. Instead of fitting other people’s idea of what works to you, make up something that will maximise your best output effectively. If you are not a morning person, do your work later. If you lose focus with shorter work periods, do one long shift and take a bigger break at the end. Tailor your work to you, not to someone else’s expectations.
