No More Guessing, Your Direct Path To a Thriving Coaching Business

Show Notes

Thank you to all the listeners who have been with us for all this time and for anyone who has not checked the back catalogue, there are plenty there.

So, I was watching a movie last night called The Paycheck with Ben Affleck. It is an oldie but goodie, and it got me thinking about a clear path, a clear path to your coaching. What if you could create a clear path to a thriving coaching business? Now, what has that got to do with the movie? Well, the movie was all about creating a future. This character, Ben Affleck, had created a machine that could predict the future. It could look around the corner and see what your future was going to be like.

What if you could do that with coaching? No doubt quite a few of you have done that when you did your coaching qualifications. So what if you could create that future right now? What if you could smell it? You could touch it. You could see it. You can visualise it. Wouldn’t that make it so much easier when you are making decisions? That is what we are going to talk about today — creating that vision so that you can be very clear about what it is that you need to do right now, today.

Having A Clear Vision

If you have a clear vision of where your coaching is going and who you are going to help and how you are going to help them, then it is very clear to see where that fits into those three content pillars or not. And it is easy to make those three content pillars. So if you know a little bit why or are just a bit skeptical, stick with me and open your mind a little bit, because that is what coaching is all about, isn’t it? It is showing us the blind spots that sometimes we cannot see for ourselves. So come along a little journey with me.

Unload Your Thoughts

Where do you start? Well, with most things, start by getting all those thoughts out of your head. Whether you do it on a piece of paper or on a computer or a tablet or a phone, that is up to you. There are plenty of scientifically proven studies and all of that kind of thing to say that getting it out of your head and onto paper is the best thing. But sometimes that is not available right at the right moment, is it? But if you can write it down, it really does help to reinforce that connection between what you are thinking and what you can create as reality.

So start with your brain dump. Get all those thoughts out of your head.

Design Your Next Move

Start planning what that future would look like. Start with one day. What would your day be like? How would you get up in the morning? What would you have for breakfast — if you ate breakfast? Would you exercise? Where would you be?

Who would be around you? All of those kinds of things. You can Google future days, future planning, all that sort of thing. Make sure that you are really clear on planning that day. Start with the minor details: what are you wearing? Are you doing coaching calls? Are you doing them in person? Are you doing them on Zoom? Are you using other technology? And how are you actually coaching? Really define those people. That is a really great exercise to go through and look at those people and get as much information you can get on them because the clearer and the easier it is to visualise who those people are.

Own Your Clarity

If you are very clear on what your coaching future is going to look like, what this thriving business is going to look like, then you are not chopping and changing because you want to do this and that and everything else. You are really clear about what that path is going to be. So yes, it is an exercise in visualising the future, but it can really help you make tangible, concrete decisions in your real life right now.

It can also show you the path of what it will take to get you there. So if you want to do 20 one-on-one clients, is that going to be 20 hours a week? And what kind of money are you going to put on that? Is that going to work for the lifestyle you want? Or is it a case of doing ten and then going into groups?

If you have big dreams but are only charging $100 an hour, is that going to work for you? Or is that going to work perfectly for you because that will give you confidence for your first one to five clients and then you can increase your rates from there? Or will you think, maybe this business is not for me?

Have a Dream Roadmap

Are you going to have a more steady schedule? Will you be working around your family, your spouse, changing your situations? What is it going to be and what is it going to look like? These are the decisions you will need to make. So plan it out so that you can see what that would look like.

When you are doing your future planning, make sure it is about a year out. If you are forecasting, you could always do one for five years as well. Think about those decisions. One-on-one coaching is a great way to start, but it may just be the beginning. You might get to 20 clients and decide 20 hours a week is enough and then move into groups.

Always make sure you are thinking about what your future could look like, and then you will be able to create it.

Make It Happen

Get it really embedded into your psyche about what this coaching business is going to look like. You might be doing a sales course now, then look at an affiliate course next. Put these things on as well, or try to encourage that.

A great way to make your vision come real is with things like

  • Vision boards. Start chopping out those pictures, use magazines, get them off the internet, print them out and create your day. Make that vision board. Put those things in that you want to do. A friend of mine wanted to go to Bali for her 40th birthday, so that has been on her vision board for about five years.
  • Incorporate people into the dream. Do you need an accountability partner? A mentor? A coach to talk through these things, help you along the way, and keep you on track? Add it to your diary. What do you need to do? Break them down — a year, six months, a month, three months in between if you want to, and your week.
  • Sticky notes. You might have a pin-up board. You might have the weekly goals on sticky notes so you can move them around. A lot of us being creative are very visual, so put those visual reminders out, put them on your phone, put them as your screensaver on your computer or your tablet.
