Show Notes
It does not matter what you say. Okay if you say really silly stuff, it does matter. But the point is, it is not the exact words that matter. It is the way you show up. It is your presence. People do not buy your offers. They buy the promise of results. And if they do not think you can deliver them, they are not going to buy.
Be Confident
If that trust is not there, they are not going to buy. We have all been to a karaoke night, and we have seen that person get up and hit all the notes perfectly. But they did not have that presence. They were a little bit quiet, maybe a bit shy, maybe looking down at the words, just not quite there. Then someone else might have adlib a bit, not known the words exactly, but they belted it out, had that stage presence, and got the audience involved. They were not perfect, but they had presence. It is the same in selling and coaching.
If you do not have that presence, it does not matter if you have a sales script or if you are saying the words perfectly. If you are not delivering with confidence and do not believe in what you are saying, nobody else will either.
Be Consistent
Think of Merlin’s multi-level marketing. Everyone in that company sells the same product for the same price. They all have the same scripts, the same social media posts, videos, product reviews, everything. Some people do really well, and others end up buying their own products or selling to friends and family at discounted rates to hit volume targets.
It comes down to presence and belief in their product and getting out and meeting new people. How much internal marketing are you doing? How much are you sitting at your computer writing posts and only pushing them out to people who already follow you?
Some of those people may convert over time, but most are just looking. You need to reach new people who have not heard about you. Yes, still your ideal people, the ones who need your services but you must go beyond your current network.
Yes, you will get some clients from your network, but many will come from your network’s network, or their network’s network. So it is important to nurture and grow your network, but also to expand your visibility. It is about how you present yourself.
Be Visible
If you are quiet and timid, that is okay. Just be authentic to who you are, and be confident. And yes, it takes practice. Few people start off amazing. You need to work at it in a way that works for you.
If video is not your thing, maybe start with voiceovers. Add photos to your voice. Your voice can be a powerful attraction tool. You are listening to this podcast right now, aren’t you? That is one great way.
Try doing short videos, lives, or get a friend to help you. You may find accountability helpful, especially if your friend is in business too. You can help each other. The point is, show up and be visible. Make sure people see you and feel like you can help them.
Build Your Presence
A great way to do this is through testimonials. If you do not have any yet, you might need to do some free work to get started. You will be surprised at the testimonials you already have. Be creative.
Think of people you have helped, people you trained with. Build up that library now. When people see what you are like, they get a feel for you. Coaching is not about the perfect script. It is about presence, listening, and asking powerful questions that create transformation. You do not have to have all the answers but your client does. Your role is to have presence, confidence, and the grit to challenge them when needed.
You need to start small. If you are worried about charging, start by volunteering. Look for real clients, even unpaid ones, rather than just people helping you get your hours up.
Being authentic builds trust. Do not over rehearse or wait for perfection. Progress over perfection. You will never get it 100% right. Just start and get better over time.
Just Start
You may get comments on your looks or delivery and those are not your people. If you are getting a lot of that, it probably means you are showing up and making an impact. Sometimes, it is just jealousy. Be resilient. Most things can be undone. So start recording. Practice. Publish.
Be human. Add stories. Case studies help, and you can combine a few for confidentiality. Being authentic builds trust. People crave real coaching. They want to be listened to, not talked over.
You need to be willing to be bad before you can be good. Start. Evaluate. Improve. Look at your content – what worked well? What can be tweaked or improved? What story can you build on? What lighting or sound could be better next time?
Think about learning to rock climb. You do not start with Mount Everest. You build strength on an indoor wall, then move to bigger hills. Coaching is the same. Start with Zoom or Loom recordings. Use your phone. Focus on audio – people will forgive video quality, but not bad sound. Get a good mic. Avoid noisy environments.
Give yourself grace. Even the greats stumble. That makes them relatable. People connect through shared journeys.
