What are ISO Standards?
ISO stands for International Organisation for Standardisation. ISO standards work to help businesses through international standards of best practices and contain many different types of standards, from products to businesses themselves. ISO standards work to provide a framework to run your business successfully and smoothly.
In some businesses you may even need ISO standards to tender, such as ISO 9001 for the engineering or manufacturing industry. Some examples that ISO standards cover are:
- ISO 9000 – Quality Management
- ISO 14000 – Environmental Management
- ISO 31000 – Risk Management
- ISO 45001 – Occupational Health & Safety
How Do ISO Standards Benefit My Business?
One of the most important skills to learn as a business owner is being able to delegate tasks. This can be difficult when your employees may not do things in exactly the same way that you do. If you have high quality standards or tasks that must be completed in a certain way, you want to make sure that everything comes out how you need it to.
Developing ISO standards and using them in a business means your quality will remain consistent.
Implementing an ISO Standard
The best way to implement an ISO standard is to study it yourself. Are you familiar with the standards laid out for your business, and can you manage them efficiently? Once you feel you understand your responsibilities, policies and objectives for ISO standards, you can begin to document the best ways for others to adhere to them.
Help with ISO Standards?
Your ISO standards will reflect what you prioritise in your business – whether that be sustainability, information security or something else entirely. There is a great market for consultants who can assist business owners in implementing ISO standards in their business. With so many different ISO standards, finding what you need and where you need it can be difficult.
