How to Do Business with People That Bring You Joy with Matt Ward

Show Notes

In 2002 Matt began working with business owners through his digital marketing agency, inConcert Web Solutions, to improve their bottom line, gain more clients, and grow their respective businesses. He sold his agency in 2018 so that he could focus on helping businesses get more word-of-mouth referrals! He’s the author of “MORE… Word of Mouth Referrals, Lifelong Customers & Raving Fans.”

Matt believes that creating deeper and more meaningful connections will result in more word-of-mouth referrals. His presentations focus on building deeper relationships. He personally uses this philosophy in his own business.

Since 2002 Matt has spoken at hundreds of business events, seminars, trainings, conferences, and associations, including Score, The Better Business Bureau, The National Paving Expo and the Vacation Rental Success Summit in Toronto, Canada. Matt is a professional member of the National Speakers Association and the host of the new small business-centered podcast, The Mass Business Podcast! Matt and his companies have received numerous awards, including:

  • 40 Under 40
  • Chamber Small Business Owner of the Year
  • Top Web Firm 7 Years in a Row

3 Reasons to Start Your Own Business

There are many reasons people decide to leave their corporate occupations to pursue life as a business owner, but the most common reasons are these 3 aspirations:

  • More Money
  • More Time
  • More Freedom

In the first 5 years of their business, most business owners do not achieve any of these things. They struggle to build a strong client base, to get enough referrals to keep a good network, or they spend all their time staring at profit margins and become overly focused on money over running the business successfully. But when you become desperate and unfulfilled because you are focusing on these things, the people around you can tell, and then they do not want to spend their time helping you.

Are You Creating Good Experiences with Your Business?

When you are feeling miserable or desperate, people can tell.

Coming to meetings, sales and networking events with a smile on your face and excitement in your voice will create a positive experience for people interacting with you and your business. Then they will want to spend more time with you. A happier, more prosperous business comes when people want to buy and do business with you.

Even with big issues affecting the world like the pandemic, remember: COVID-19 does not control your bank account.

You do.

Trust Your Gut

Mindset plays a huge role in picking the clients who will bring you joy and prosperity.

Jim Rohn says that we are a combination of the 5 people closest to us and if those people include your current clients, you want to make sure you are selling to the right people. If a client is taking up too much time in your business, or they are demanding or rude, or they refuse to pay your full fees – are they worth the effort?

The goal is to get to a level where you can turn away clients that your gut does not trust, and get there as fast as you can.
